We'll also see more elaborate forms of the sacred dances performed at ceremonies in backyards and banquet halls across Miami every weekend. By calling these dances "folklore," choreographers can take the movements and the inspiring stories of figures like Oya, the Afro-Cuban divinity of the wind pictured here, out their religious context and put them on stage in a fusion with modern and contemporary dance techniques. In other words, don't expect the gods to show up at the Filmore. The faithful believe that can only happen at an actual ceremony. But do expect to be awe-struck by what you see on stage.

Based in Havana, the group performs both domestically and internationally. At their space in Vedado, a formerly aristocratic neighborhood in Havana, there is a large courtyard known as El Palenque, the historical term used for runaway slave settlements. The Co-Director is Rogelio Martinez Fure , well known for his writings on AfroCuban culture, who has been with the troupe since its founding. Can anybody say they know this Island if they have never felt the beating of the drums throbbing in their chest or watched believers frenetically dancing non-stop in an ancestral impulse that arises from the very roots of our national culture? None of todays dance or music manifestations can be understood without knowing about the folklore that was cooked up in that cauldron of the times, filled with the cultural elements of Africa, Spain, Haiti, France and Asia. Since it was created in , the Conjunto Folklorico Nacional de Cuba has been responsible for the conservation and dissemination of our traditional legacies. Right from the start, the group had very clear goals: salvaging and claiming as their own the genuine traditional music and dance forms that, after being rigorously researched, could be recast into an artistic style that would fulfill all of the most stringent demands of contemporary theater. Over 2, performances in Cuba and around the world, awards and recognitions collected at important events, a strong presence over many years…these all point to the fact that this is a highly successful artistic enterprise.
