KTM 's latest SMC R proves that supermoto-style street bikes can be entertaining and even reasonably practical, even if most motorcyclists' enthusiasm for this eccentric form of two-wheeled sport, which blends road-racing and motocross, has faded in recent years. In theory that format makes plenty of sense, given that many dual-purpose machines are rarely ridden off-road. In reality many supermoto street bikes are too tall, softly suspended and uncomfortable for much except short blasts around town. This updated SMC R has several things in its favour, notably its new engine, the cc, sohc single-cylinder unit that was introduced last year in the Duke roadster.

It still looks much like a classic hooligan bike, which is to say, essentially a dirtbike with street tires. The long suspension travel inherent in the design plays right into its acrobatic nature. The flyline is made rather unusual looking by the boomerang-shaped bench seat that dominates the design and displaces the fuel tank so that it covers almost all the way up to the steering head. Far from being just another dual-sport , the Enduro rocks the same top-shelf electronic rider aids as the SMC R to give it a safety and stability far beyond the norm for an off-road machine. A short-rise tapered handlebar puts your hands right in line with the steering head axis, plus it comes adjustable with four positions from which to choose. In order to accomplish that, the factory built the tank as a stressed unit that replaces the traditional pipe-subframe assembly.
