Samsung has been steadily improving the camera experience in its Galaxy smartphones for several generations. The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge come with one of two different rear camera sensors depending on region, cellular provider, or perhaps just random chance. So how can you tell which sensor an S6 will come with? Well, as far as we can tell right now there does not seem to be a pattern. Our Canadian models of both versions for Bell and Rogers also have Sony sensors, but our Canadian S6 edge for the Telus network uses the Samsung sensor see the next section for a quality comparison between the two sensors.

Where improvement is needed is not in the imaging sensor or the number of megapixels, but in the digital processing of those images - something which Apple does extremely well using just an 8 megapixel camera. Another area where Apple camera currently trumps Samsung is in the range of accessories available. With so many different models available, it becomes impractical for accessory manufacturers to create products, such as the Olloclip add-on lens, to fit all of them. Olloclip does produce one lens each for the Galaxy S4 and S5, but that leaves all other models out in the cold and the range of iPhone compatible products is much bigger by comparison. In the end none of the specs mentioned by Jang, alone or combined, can guarantee a great phone camera.

Another major area of focus for Samsung for the S6 was refining the camera. OIS is also introduced to the Galaxy S lineup for this generation, and in practice the stabilization is as effective as the Galaxy Note 4. Samsung also strongly prioritized shooting speed and general camera speed with this generation, as they introduced object tracking AF, a double tap camera gesture, and further refinement of the PDAF system in order to make the camera experience much better than before.

While we here at Imaging Resource don't normally review smartphone cameras, it's hard to deny their popularity as photographic tools nowadays. One of the most popular smartphones -- Samsung's Galaxy S line -- recently announced its sixth iteration, the aptly named Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. The latest model Galaxy smartphone features some notable improvements and rather impressive specs regarding its camera hardware and software, as well as some nice refinements to the device's overall design and build. Since we're camera people here, let's begin with the camera specs and performance. There's no telling which brand of sensor you'll receive before purchasing your device, but they reportedly have the same specs and performance. Ours turned out to have a Sony sensor.

Compared to previous generation Galaxy S phones the entire user interface has been simplified with fewer menus and pre-installed apps to increase the responsiveness of he device.

Sensor Size Comparison: iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge vs Note 4

SamMobile reports that some Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge models are using different camera hardware to the versions which received such favourable reviews at launch. The difference lies in the imaging sensor, the part of the camera which measures the light coming through the lens for conversion into a digital image. Close inspection of early S6 handsets revealed that they were all fitted with a Sony IMX sensor - the same model found in the Galaxy Note 4. Like all of the technology used in our products, they meet our strict global quality and performance standards. While there do seem to be two different types of sensor currently fitted in various samples of the S6, the headline specs remain the same. In a follow-up post, SamMobile has posted some comparison shots taken with the two types of sensor - and there are visible differences.

  1. May 8, The heart of the digital camera is its sensor, and in the case of the Samsung Galaxy S6 -- at least in terms of its rear-facing camera -- it's a 1/".
