By Sandra Cordon. As plans were announced for a Wednesday funeral in Rome, the mayor of Daniele's hometown of Naples lowered flags there to half-mast and declared a day of mourning for the same date. President Giorgio Napolitano praised the musician, whose music was infused with the rhythms and the dialect of his native city. We miss Pino Daniele. We lack the greatness of the musician, the virtuosity of the guitarist, the words of the poet, the sensitivity of the artist, the irony, the meekness and the privacy of the character, the social commitment of man. For us Neapolitans lack, more than anything, his affection for Naples and Neapolitan people. Pino is the father, the brother, the friend who, suddenly disappearing, has left inside and outside each of us a deep and hardly filled void. During his early and brilliant artistic career, Pino Daniele has been able to embody the Neapolitan style the real one, far from that cloying and oleographic but often propelled to eminently commercial purposes better than any other musician as he liked to define himself , proposing feelings , reflections and denunciations through an original and inimitable sound, genuine syncretism of Neapolitan, Mediterranean, Latin, blues, jazz and funky sounds. Contaminations and fusions of musical genres and instruments to talk about love and friendship, social and political themes, Neapolitan, national and global.
Daniele was born and raised in the tough, crime-infested Sanita neighborhood of Naples and drew on that experience to tinge his love songs with themes of poverty and injustice. His band was once the opening act for a historic concert in Milan by Bob Marley. Naples Mayor Luigi de Magistris ordered flags on city buildings to be flown at half-mast and declared a day of mourning for the man whose melancholic, nasal voice made him instantly recognizable to millions. Daniele, who often sang in a mix of Italian, Neapolitan dialect and English, studied accounting in high school but decided early on he wanted to be a musician. In it, he spoke of the hope and despair of his city, home to the Camorra organized crime group.
They are almost 5 months now that Pino Daniele he left us and there were so many initiatives to remember and celebrate it. The appointments in his honor, however, continue and one of the next will involve the subways and the funiculars of Naples. Indeed, on the occasion of the inauguration of the next Show Rock! The 6 June , simultaneously with the presentation of Rock! It is not the first time that happens because even in the days following the disappearance of the Neapolitan bluesman it was possible to listen to its most representative pieces within the stations and trains. This initiative will be carried out concurrently with the beginning of the exhibition because also the rock music festival will be a tribute to Pino Daniele.
