After a challenging couple of days, Tom Dumoulin laid his hands on the most important maglia rosa of the Giro d'Italia, the final one. Dumoulin put in a superb effort in the final time trial from Monza to Milan, to take second place on the stage and make up more than enough time to climb above Nairo Quintana in the overall standings. Dumoulin beat the Colombian by just 31 seconds with Vincenzo Nibali finishing third overall. An emotional Jos van Emden made it a doubly good day for the Dutch with the stage victory, just ahead of Dumoulin. The Grande Partenza will set things off in Sardinia on May 5 in Alghero with a lengthy km road race to Olbia and overall winner will be crowned three weeks later upon its conclusion following a flat 28km time trial to Milan on May
The beautiful region and its varied landscape provides the perfect terrain for riders of all levels, and together with bike tours organised by local companies, as well as clubs and professional cycling associations, the region is being increasingly known as a cycling destination. The route will pass through several key areas within the region, including Riccione, Ravenna, Modena, Carpi and the spectacular path of San Luca. The second stage, on Sunday 12 May, will head further south from Bologna. Two other exciting race segments taking place within Emilia Romagna will be the Riccione — San Marino RSM the only border crossing in the race , and an individual time trial of Offering km of racing on a flat route, this section will thrill the sprinters. On Wednesday 22 May, the cyclists will head west out of the Emilia-Romagna region, leaving from Carpi.

The race will include six sprint stages, eight stages of medium difficulty climbing, five highly testing climbing stages and two individual time trials for a total of The iconic Stelvio Pass is the Cima Coppi. A classic Appenine stage featuring a series of climbs and descents to move from one valley to the next. After a pass over the finish line, the stage parcours takes the climb up to Monte Fumaiolo, and a descent leads straight to the finish. The Giro has been my passion since I was a kid. The overall standings remained unchanged with Tom Dumoulin Sunweb keeping his substantial lead over Nairo Quintana Movistar. Fraile went on the attack early in the hilly km route.
