Words by Steve Jones. Photos by Andy Lloyd. Not many of these around, an aggro angled mm, at a good price, with good sizes and a sensible build. Danny Hart will certainly be spending some hours on this one over the winter. Standover is usually an issue on a lot of size large bikes, not so on the Reign, it comes in with just enough room to drop the post and get into and out of shape at the drop of the shoulder. A good amount of length in the cockpit meant we were able to run a crazy short 35mm Easton stem and mm bar to give a super stable ride characteristic.
The multi pivot works really well and the bearings lasted a long time and were easy and cheap to replace. Finish and paintwork were spot on. In every other department the Reign excelled. Highly recommend. I have had a Reign x1 since Heavy bike but climbs well and handles anything I throw at it on the downs.

It still sports mm of travel but the addition of ISCG tabs on the BB, a chain device and an own-brand dropper post make it a far more sorted all-mountain proposition. The irony is that this development comes just as the industry has adopted Type 2 and Shadow Plus rear mechs that partially negate their requirement. By switching from a press-fit BB shell to a traditional threaded design, Giant has been able to squeeze the tabs on without a wholesale change to the lower link of the Maestro suspension. The open-cartridge Fox Evolution series mm fork is the cheapest model on test, but it offered really good performance. The Talas adjuster lets you drop the travel to mm, lowering the handlebars and moving your weight forward for climbing. DT Swiss-made E rims are laced with forged butted spokes and are plenty tough, but are easily the heaviest wheels on test.

I am selling my Giant Reign X1 size medium. I bought this bike in from the original owner who had plans to get into enduro riding but ended up sticking with downhill, so I have owned it essentially its entire life. I have loved riding this bike but am purchasing a new one, so this one will have to go. This bike is ready to roll and has a couple minor upgrades but is otherwise stock. The frame is in good shape with no dents or structural damage and only your normal minor paint chips and cable rub from riding. The fork and shock have no chipping on the coating.
