This version of the Elantra was a well-rounded competitor with rankings near the top of our small-sedan Ratings. An easy car with which to live, the Hyundai combines nimble handling with comfort and a well-controlled ride. The car also offers a neatly laid out and well-equipped interior. However, the coupe-like stylling dictates a beltline that swoops upward toward the rear. This can impede the view to the rear quarters. The hp, four-cylinder engine delivers solid performance and very good fuel economy. The cabin is well finished and the rear seat is relatively roomy, though road noise is rather pronounced.
The Hyundai Elantra came out of nowhere in the model year to become one of the best-selling and best all-around compact cars available in the U. In fact, it was named 's North American Car of the Year. It's an example of how quickly South Korea has learned from Japanese automaker successes and rewritten their playbook. The Elantra's an excellent value on many fronts. By its spec sheet, it's a mid-size vehicle, and it shows. The sedan's front seats could use a little more bolstering and lateral support, as in the coupe, but on either, they're surrounded by ample space in all directions. The current-generation Elantra is a leader in its class thanks to its great styling, lots of standard features, good reliability, and decent performance. Its competitors include some solid entries from Honda , Toyota , and Ford , and it still holds its own.

The coupe designation has been blurred by the marketing minions, but we ordinarily understand it to describe a car with two doors and a formal trunk. Beyond that, we tend to perceive coupes as sexier than their sedan equivalents, with a suggestion of more performance. The sexier part of this perception is true of the Hyundai Elantra coupe. Its four-door sibling is already one of the more-eye-catching members of the compact crowd, and subtracting a set of doors adds a little more visual zing to the package. Subtracting a set of doors can be an oversimplification, but not in this case. The wheelbase, width, and height dimensions of the two- and four-door versions of the Elantra are essentially identical. The only distinction is in overall length.
