Shut lines are the enemy of stylists. Audi's fashion-forward fastback powers into its second generation with an eye toward the future of luxury. All-wheel drive systems like Audi's fabled Quattro have long done a good job of mitigating Mother Nature's punch, but even she can't always be denied. That was exactly the case in February, when nasty winter weather snarled air travel and prevented our man Tim Stevens from getting to the international launch of the Audi A7 in South Africa. I felt genuinely bad for our editor in chief, but I was also quite pleased to belatedly score Roadshow's first drive of this second-generation slipstream four-door in its native element -- on the German Autobahn -- earlier this month. You wanted Audis to look a bit different, and carry some bravado? Here you go. Audis always major on design attention to detail, often more than absolute driving pin-sharpness. A great deal of A7 Mk2 is shared with the latest Audi A8 — the chassis building blocks now much more prevalent in steel than aluminium , the interior technology, and the mild-hybrid volt drivetrains. Meanwhile buyers at the top end of the A7 price spectrum might even consider a Tesla Model S as an alternative, especially if it's a company car.
