The world champion, having qualified second at the Red Bull Ring, was expected to be demoted to fifth, punished for blocking Alfa Romeo driver Kimi Raikkonen in qualifying. F or Sebastian Vettel, his torrid time of late extended into another weekend. An engine problem prevented him from starting a lap in the shootout for pole, and the German, already 76 points Hamilton in the championship standings, will start a lowly ninth. Hamilton should have been on the front row, but for an uncharacteristic mistake in the opening moments of qualifying.

The Briton will enter his home race 20 points behind championship leader Sebastian Vettel after recovering from a pre-race grid penalty to finish fourth at the Red Bull Ring. His Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas is also breathing down his neck, having sealed the second win of his career following a blistering start. Vettel came home a close second to extend his advantage and Daniel Ricciardo took the third step on the podium for Red Bull at their home track. Hamilton, still upset after Vettel escaped any post-race reprimand for deliberately driving into him at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, came here with plenty to ponder. He could still have taken victory on the streets of Baku only to be forced to pit with a loose headrest before a gearbox penalty here would severely hamper his chances. Despite setting the early pace, he would drop five places on the grid and a brake-disc failure in Saturday practice added to his issues before he could go only third-fastest in qualifying.
From pole position, Bottas made the perfect getaway to lead — so much so that both Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo questioned over team radio whether the Mercedes driver had in fact jumped the start. Bottas was placed under investigation, but was deemed to have taken 0. Ricciardo settled into third after pushing Kimi Raikkonen out wide at Turn 3, which dropped the Finn back to fifth place behind the Haas of Romain Grosjean. But the three-time champion soon found himself stuck behind Raikkonen and ended up being the first of the leaders to pit on lap 31, swapping his supersofts for a set of ultrasofts that he would take to the end. Ricciardo came in to change his ultrasofts for a set of supersofts on lap 33, with Vettel following suit a lap later.

Q: What about you and Seb? Is it possible to be friends with your teammate? Kimi Raikkonen: Yeah, I think so. I mean, we know each other for a long time. We have a good relationship. Now we are in the same team, and we are teammates. Q: How is your relationship with President Marchionne?
