2017 British Grand Prix - Race Highlights2017
The fate of the race has been uncertain since , when the club exercised its option to break the year deal it signed with Formula One in As an independent promoter, it felt it was paying too much money to hold the race. And with Formula One set to announce its calendar in December, the negotiations had taken on a new urgency. The new contract to preserve the race at the track was signed on Monday. Chase Carey, the chairman and chief executive of Formula One, said the deal was beneficial for both sides.
From pole position, Hamilton took an early lead after a stoppage for Jolyon Palmer's Renault on the warm-up lap, the result of brake-by-wire and hydraulic problems, caused an aborted start and an extra formation lap. By the time Hamilton made his one and only stop on lap 25, he was 12 seconds clear of Raikkonen, and was never threatened thereafter as he raced to a fourth win of the season and his fifth victory at Silverstone, equalling Jim Clark and Alain Prost for British GP wins. Raikkonen held second, but Vettel came under pressure from Valtteri Bottas in the latter stages of the race, the Finn having recovered from ninth on the grid following his five-place grid drop. With Bottas going long on softs and then switching to supersofts, there was nothing Vettel could do to hold off the Mercedes driver, who moved ahead at Stowe on lap That meant Bottas completed a Mercedes , 14 seconds behind Hamilton, while Raikkonen took third a further 22 seconds back.
This race was the seventy-second running of the British Grand Prix , the sixty-eighth time that the race has been run as a World Championship event, and the fifty-first time that the World Championship event has been held at the Silverstone Circuit. Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel entered the round with a twenty-point lead over Mercedes 's Lewis Hamilton in the Drivers' Championship. Mercedes led Ferrari by thirty-three points in the Constructors' Championship. The race was dominantly won by Lewis Hamilton, who achieved a grand slam , starting from pole position, leading every lap of the race, setting fastest lap, and finally winning with a second lead over Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas. In contrast, his championship rival Sebastian Vettel suffered a tyre failure with two laps to go, subsequently only finishing seventh. As a result, his lead over Hamilton in the Drivers' standings was cut down to one point. On 11 July , the BRDC, the owners of Silverstone, activated a break clause in their contract meaning unless a new contract is signed, will be the final year the British Grand Prix takes place at Silverstone.
