Back in the golden era of action cinema, otherwise known as the 80s, muscular heroes dominated the big screen and absolutely flooded the burgeoning straight-to-video market. While the likes of Schwarzenegger and Stallone had broken into the mainstream and became household names, there was no shortage of up and coming younger actors keen to follow in their footsteps. Back when I was at school, Schwarzenegger was the biggest star around, and I have clear memories of how popular he was, with his movies being a constant source of chatter in and around lessons. When I found Jean-Claude Van Damme, simply through a process of renting or rather getting my Dad to, as I was still technically underage every new action movie released on video, it was a personal discovery that made it seem even more special. I appreciate that must sound strange, but there was a certain triumph to taking my beloved copy of A. L into school and spreading the word, showing the best fight scenes to my class, like some kind of JCVD evangelist.

Lots of high kicks. The production had one ace up its sleeve though in the form of legendary action director Ringo Lam. The late, great Lam had previously worked with JCVD on Maximum Risk and the criminally underrated Replicant and knew how to get the best out of the martial arts master — mainly by challenging him at every turn. Though he took a while to warm up to it, by this point Van Damme had shown himself to be a more than capable actor — he just needed the right director to help coax it out of him. Lam was that director. Forced to share a cell with a violent and mysterious inmate known only as , LeBlanc suffers through the degradation and torment of prison life. It was grim, gross and kind of powerful.

W here is Jean-Claude Van Damme? We were supposed to meet in London, until he cancelled his trip at the last minute. Then I was to visit him on a film set in Budapest, but that fell through when he wrapped his scenes early, and so he invited me instead to his parents' home in Belgium, only to go missing in action for 24 hours in the middle of negotiations. None of this is too surprising; after all, this is the self-sabotaging prima donna action star who rose in the 80s and ignominiously nose-dived in the 90s, having burned all his bridges in Hollywood. And then, as I'm beginning to give up hope, he calls.
