Under 30lb with pedals on an extra large, crazy. Cannondale have been very tough on pricing of the new Jekyll and this bike offers good value for a full carbon frame, wheelset, crankset and bars which few indirect sales avenues can match. If carbon is your thing of course. There are no question marks here. The Hustle and Flow damper features with remote adjust are designed to give mm in the latter and mm on the former setting. As such many will regard this as an enduro race bike designed to get you up the climbs quicker, but testing the theory is difficult one. There was a time when you felt safe in the knowledge that mm travel would get you through.

The Cannondale Jekyll is a bike with a long history. Since that podium glory, the bike has been fundamentally revised. The former pull-shock has disappeared altogether, but the Jekyll remains full of peculiarities. However, the design principle here is one of form following function, and once you find yourself reaching for the bottle on a climb, you will be thanking Cannondale. Cannondale opted for an asymmetric mm rear triangle, moving the drive-side six millimetres to the right instead of just three, allowing for stiffer, symmetrically tensioned rear wheels, as well as super-short chainstays mm.

Cannondale's new Jekyll is a marked departure from the previous bike to sport the name and from a day spent chucking it around the woods, it feels like a big improvement too. That said, it's pretty much on point for the current generation of enduro bikes and a serious improvement over the conservative figures of the old machine. The biggest difference between the old and new Jekyll is that while the old bike used a proprietary rear shock that was actuated by being pulled apart, this bike uses a much more conventional design that's squashed together. Unlike the old unit, it doesn't alter bike geometry as it changes the travel, though on the plus side it's said to be significantly lighter. It's also goodbye to the single sided Lefty Supermax fork that was found on the higher end bikes, gone in favour of conventional units from Fox and RockShox. While Cannondale's data claimed their one-legged wonder was stiffer than their rivals, it's fair to say that it struggled to offer the same damping performance as it had to squeeze both damper and spring into the same space.

By Guy Kesteven. Cannondale rarely follows convention, and while the Jekyll ditches its single-sided Lefty fork, the way the shock sits above and ahead of the kinked linkage gives the carbon mainframe a distinctive look. It leaves room for a neat side-loading bottle cage on the seat tube too, and thru-axle pivots make it a lot stiffer than it looks. Stiffness is also a strong point of the BB30 bottom bracket shell and huge head and main tubes. The rear end is alloy, and the asymmetric kinked seat tube, chainstays and rear wheel mean it can be kept super-short mm while still providing ample clearance for 2. The own-brand cockpit dimensions are excellent, the Race Face dropper is super-reliable and the Fabric saddle is day comfy. Once the fork and shock move past their stubborn initial phase, sensitivity is good, with an easy, generous mid stroke that gives good traction and speed sustain.
