The directions to the Museum were a little unclear, but once we found it we were overwhelmed by the Wonderful museum not to be missed while in Romagna Adriatic Coast , visited at the time when The museum is located in an old convent, which provides glimpses of the foundations of earlier buildings through glass floor panels and worth it just for that. The exhibitions vary over time and when we visited there was an excellent art deco presentation. This is of course in keeping with the surrounding area, which offers many buildings of that era.
It leads to a consideration of how Italians, who had previously been divided among different local political, social and cultural realities, experienced the aspiration and the reality of becoming one people, sharing a common history. Art also served as the medium for presenting the variety and charm of the habits and customs of the differing local identities and transmitted the excellence of artistic techniques from sculpture to jewellery, to outstanding craftsmanship, that were still in demand world-over, just as they had been during the Renaissance, in the days of Giambologna and Benvenuto Cellini. The exhibition contains a selection of excellent works, many chosen from those presented at the great National Exhibitions , from the earliest edition in Florence in , to those hosted in Rome, Turin and Florence in to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Italian Unity; while many of these were award-winning works, others were considered outrageous. The division of the selected works into sections enables the exhibition to retrace the course of different genres, from the historical genre, to the representation of modern life, to the art of social commentary, to portraiture, to landscape, to veduta and to the new experimentations. In many cases, the very extent of the areas involved meant the Exhibitions changed the face of the host cities, for example, Palermo in , pushing them towards modernization. The documentation of these urban interventions provides an original and particularly significant means of understanding the styles and architectural solutions proposed as a model for a united Italy. An immersive journey through time and space permits us to encounter new cultural and social themes, with a popular impact and universal significance.
Between the s and s of the past century the Deco taste developed especially in Italy. The myth of nature was substituted by the machine, the symmetries became geometries, the high quality handicraft made the way for the industrial production showing new shapes and materials. A certain interest in new esthetic trends emerged in the Biennial exhibitions in Monza, but the Paris exposition offered a wide European vision which lasted for all the s. It was a crowning moment involving and subverting the decorative arts in different fields, above all the ceramic production. The new taste expressed various esthetical and exotic features in the architectural decorations and in the proto-design that characterized theatres, ocean liners, railway stations, cinema interiors and middle class private houses.
The triumph of machinery, technology, geometry, squared and measured shapes. The Art Deco was more of an artistic movement: an authentic bourgeois lifestyle, marked by the pursuit of luxury and pleasure. An exhibition traces the genesis and evolution of this Italian and European artistic production of the twenties, with results especially Americans after The Art Deco crosses with shattering force the decade, with furniture, ceramics, glass, metalwork, textiles, bronzes, plasters, jewelry, silver and clothes, impersonating the vigor of high and proto-industrial craftsmanship contributing to the birth of design and Made in Italy. The relationship with the Liberty, which preceded the Art Deco, first was of continuity, then exceeded, until the opposition.
